Viruses

"Eye Dog"
There is currently a major security hole in Internet Explorer 5+, and Office 2000. Caused by a faulty ActiveX control in I.E., scriptlet.typelib, called the Eye Dog vulnurability.  Anti-Virus software will not protect you from this.   With this "hole" a malicious e-mail or web page, when viewed by almost any HTML enabled web browser or mail client could place a virus on a users system.

Bymer32
The Bymer virus is one that exploits the MS scriptlet.typelib vulnurability, it is a network based virus which spreads through computer shares. While this virus does minimal damage, the method it uses could easily be exploited for a far more damaging purpose. It adds entries to the registry and win.ini to run itself. It creates a fake WININIT.INI, WININIT.EXE, and WININIT.LOG, it also carries a payload of the DNETC client containing DNETC.EXE and DNETC.INI. A valid client (Distributed.net), exploited by the virus' author.

Upon reboot, after the windows boot screen is displayed the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message is displayed (You will not be able to boot up your machine to windows!). Repairing this is a signifigant task for which you will likely have to spend several hours on the phone with Microsoft. Right now, the security certificate that the updates display warn that they do not match microsofts...
